In 2013, Karen Geiger was suspended by FINRA for one month and fined $15,000 (which included $2,000 in disgorgement of commissions) for selling GWG renewable secured debentures. FINRA alleged that the GWG debentures were illiquid and risky and not suitable for a couple with a moderate risk tolerance.

GWG has recently been in the news after it filed for bankruptcy in April 2022. When financial advisors recommend products like GWG, they have an obligation to ensure that the investments are suitable for the customer. Moreover, the advisor must refrain from making material misrepresentations or omissions about the GWG products.
