FINRA barred Butler from the securities industry, concerning allegations that he stole over $170,000 from an elderly customer suffering from declining mental health. Butler was also alleged to have named himself as the primary beneficiary of an annuity that the elderly customer had.
FINRA alleged that Butler stole money from the customer by withdrawing money from her accounts during 2011 and 2012. As part of the investigation, FINRA barred Butler from the securities industry and ordered him to pay restitution of over $170,000.
Joseph R. Butler was a financial advisor and registered representative of Woodbury Financial Services1997 to August 2012. He worked at a branch office in Clinton, Maryland and lived in Brandywine.
Brokerage firms like Woodbury Financial Services have a responsibility to adequately supervise all representatives who are registered through their firm. Brokerage firms also must take steps to ensure that their financial advisors follow all securities rules and regulations, as well as internal firm policies.
