Louis J. Spina, T3 Trading Group, and Barclays Capital
We are currently investigating allegations made against Louis J. Spina of Miami, Florida. Louis J. Spina, who also resided in Colts Neck, New Jersey, recently pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges in connection with running a $20 million Ponzi scheme, and it is alleged that investors in his scheme lost $12.7 million. Spina was arrested in November 2013 and pleaded guilty on November 20, 2014. Spina allegedly put only $9.5 million into a trading account and used the remaining $10.5 million to make interest payments to investors and return some portions of their principals, as well as pay for his personal expenses. He also allegedly made a $400,000 donation to an unnamed private university.
Louis Spina was a registered representative and financial advisor with a number of brokerage firms recently, including with T3 Trading Group from September 2013 to November 2013, with Echotrade from June 2010 to September 2013, with Barclays Capital from September 2008 to April 2010, and with Lehman Brothers from December 2007 to September 2008.
Broker-dealers like T3 Trading Group and Barclays Capital have a responsibility to adequately supervise all representatives who are registered through their firm, including investments sold by their registered representatives. Broker-dealers also must take steps to ensure that their financial advisors follow all securities rules and regulations, as well as internal firm policies.
